Emily leads a breath-centered yoga practice that gently challenges us to stay present as we work in and through our comfort zones. She offers mindful, organic movement that is both meditative and vigorous. She invites us to pay attention to subtleties of our sensation and alignment in order to create space internally, making way for healing and discovery. In her classes, she encourages students always to honor their own bodies and beings, while valuing the community aspect of the space. She weaves strategic sequencing and thoughtful thematic focus that bridge movement on the mat and practice beyond it.
Emily's training emphasizes anatomical precision and structural alignment along with compassionate observation and adjustment. She has specialized training in anatomy, backcare, anxiety/depression, addiction, trauma-sensitivity, and yoga for young people. She studies with Alison West at Yoga Union where she earned her 300-hour Certification in 2014. She studied with Off the Mat, Into the World, Street Yoga, Bent on Learning, Leslie Kaminoff / the Breathing Project, Jonathan FitzGordon, Jyll Hubbard-Salk, Elena Brower, Larry Yang and many inspired teachers on this path. She received her 200-hour certification from SchoolYoga Institute on location in Playa Marsella, Nicaragua in 2010.
In 2009, Emily created Spirit Boxing, a workshop that combines her experience as a former amateur boxer and yogini, to serve women, youth, and queer / trans community. She offers boxing lessons in both small group and private sessions.
In addition to her freelance teaching, Emily is a co-owner of Third Root Community Health Center, a cooperative in Brooklyn, where the crossroads of her work as a movement professional, social justice activist and spiritual seeker joyfully meet.
Emily has a BA in Cultural Studies from Eugene Lang College of New School University (2005).
